Sparta, Tennessee, population 4,681.

Rock House Shrine. Andrew Jackson slept here as he traveled between Nashville and Washington, President Jame K Polk stopped here too; this former stagecoach inn was constructed in 1835 along the Wilderness Trail and is listed today on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Virgin Falls, on Scott Gulf Road, is formed by an underground stream as it emerges from a cave, it plunges 110 feet and goes back into a cave at the bottom; allow 6-8 hours for the complete 8-mile hike.

Sunset Rock on Highway U70 east of Sparta, is a scenic overlook that gives a 50-mile view of the Central Basin on clear days.

In downtown Sparta's Liberty Square, check out the Sparta Amphitheater; it seats 500 and is used for concerts and programs; gazebo concession area.

The Sparta Spoke Factory at One Quality Lane began making spokes for wagon wheels in 1896; today they produce hardwood furniture parts and a fine line of handmade furniture that is custom finished and numbered for authenticity; order red oak rockers, walnut candlesticks.
