The fishing is good and the living is easy. Quality of life and appreciation of the simple things are the keywords in the towns you'll visit on this Trip.

You'll see evidence of quality at The Sparta Spoke Factory; even their address is One Quality Lane. They've been in business since 1896, and today you can select the custom finish for your handmade rocker, or side table, and have it numbered for authenticity; the only one of its kind.

At the Joe L Evins Appalachian Craft Center, you can study in a professional crafts school, or admire the work done by others. The gallery displays crafts from artisans in the 13 Appalachian states; the classes offer training in fiber, metal, wood, glass and clay. From a degreed program through Tennessee Tech to summer workshops, children's classes, Elderhostel, or simply visiting the studio of a working artist, you can develop your appreciation of fine craftsmanshp.

In Smithville every July, people come together to hone the craft of fiddle playing at one of the top 100 tourism events in North America, the Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree. The National Championship Country Musician Beginners category of the event was designed to preserve the country music tradition by encouraging young people to compete.

Perhaps the natural beauty of this area increases the "appreciation" factor of anyone who lives here, or visits. It's easy to stop at Sunset Rock and gaze out over the Central Basin, enjoying a 50-mile view. It's awesome to hike to Virgin Falls in Scott Gulf, an 8-mile trek to see a stream emerge from a cave, plunge 110 feet, and disappear again in a cave at the bottom. It's calming to walk the lush woodlands and sit beside the cascading Falling Water River in Burgess Falls Natural Area.

Did somebody mention fishing? It's no secret that The Blue Hole in Center Hill Lake is considered one of the finest fishing places in the state; it's adjacent to the shore in Rock Island State Rustic Park. Center Hill Lake is blessed with two state parks, nine recreation areas, and eight commercial marinas that offer boat rentals and fishing supplies. Edgar Evins State Park has cabins and campsites. Come in the fall for the 50-mile cruise up the lake. Ah yes, the fishing is good, and the living is easy.
