"There's Nemo!" Kayla shrieked, and pulled to go in that direction. "OK" I said to myself, "It's time for me to start thinking like a three-year-old." My grandma-thought would have me start at the front door and take it stop to stop, keeping in sight the benches for occasional resting, and the restroom door. Conservation of energy is the marker of a good day!

A three-year-old approaches life differently. Is it exciting? Is it beautiful? Do it NOW! Wheeeee! And so, we by-passed the octopus tank, where it was feeding time. The crowd was so eager to watch an octopus eat, so glommed to the glass, that all little Kayla could see was people be-hinds.

I thought we'd be safe on a week-day, but I sadly underestimated the seriousity of the last week before school 506 Beneath the surface

. Every parent that had put off "Taking The Kids Somewhere" all summer, thinking, THERE'S STILL TIME, was here today. We were on the Seattle waterfront, over a pier that was built for something else, in an aquarium that is outdated but being updated. Some of the exhibits are "closed" today but Kayla doesn't notice, she's never been here before and every new discovery sets her squealing with delight.

"Pick me up G-Mom! Pick me up! I wanna see!" Little arms lifted, she jumped up and down, and how could I say no, even with my scrunchy spine? I'm surprised that a facility designed mostly for the enjoyment of kids doesn't have a single exhibit low enough for a small child to see. Maybe it has something to do with liability. Parental supervision and all. Don't want a two-year-old sticking a hand in the pirahana tank!

And so I picked her up. We perched on the edge of a seat-wall of plastic rocks, ooo-ing and ah-ing together over the corally-orange of a resting starfish.

"I want to touch it," Kayla said, reaching out.
