My flight from Seattle to Fairbanks was a one-stop. Just a few minutes in Anchorage, the itinerary stated. My seatmate on the first leg of the trip was a dignified, tall lady wearing a gray tailored suit. She and her husband were headed for Anchorage and a guided tour. However their flight was cancelled and they were re-assigned to my plane. He was seated somewhere in the back of the plane and she was stuck with a middle seat, but she wasn't complaining; she seemed amiable and good-natured, glad to be out seeing new sights. Said they were going to Seward and onto the Kenai.
It was a pleasant trip, and I even caught a nap or two. Our landing in Anchorage was smooth, and the pilot announced our gate. "Stay on the plane if you're going on to Fairbanks," he said. I snuggled down with my book to wait.
Down the runway, 500 feet or more, the pilot spoke again. "They just changed gates on me," he said. "Everybody off. Fairbanks, they'll tell you at the gate which plane you'll need to get on."
Turns out there was a four-hour delay. I realized I wouldn't get to Fairbanks in time to see the show at the Gold Rush Saloon that evening.
So I went in search of airport pie.
