The first time I went to Charleston was November 1993 on a long Visit-Some-Capitals trip while I was gathering information for capital city articles. Headed north from Chattanooga on the freeway, into Virginia, then left! I spent the night in Charleston, a lovely little city on the river. The capitol building is beautiful.

From there on to Columbus, Lansing, Harrisburg, Trenton, and more, a Big Trip. I passed through again in June 1997 when I did a Chattanooga to Canada On I-75 trip, but I didn't stop. Just saw the gold dome gleaming, tucked there in the mountains, with crystal chandelier inside.

West Virginia was the THIRTY-FIFTH state.
Date: June 30, 1863
State Nickname: Mountain State
Key Words: Chandelier, Mountain Stage, Separate, Crafts, Whitewater

The land that became the 35th state was actually part of the 10th state for 75 years! During the Civil War, the people west of the Appalachian Mountains decided they did not want to support the Confederate cause, as Virginia did. So they separated and formed a new state.

The city's capitol is one of the most beautiful in the country. Built in 1932 in Italian Renaissance style, it has a gold leaf dome 300 feet high. Inside hangs a 10,080-piece hand-cut crystal chandelier that weighs 2 tons.

On the banks of the Kanawha River next door to the capitol is the Cultural Center, with the state museum, West Virginia crafts shops, and Mountain Stage, a live public radio show heard on more than 115 stations nationwide.

Drive the Elk River Scenic route; visit Coonskin Park (Daniel Boone once lived in the area); hike, ski, and ride horseback in Kanawha State Forest; fish and raft the whitewater in the many mountain streams.
