Son Rick and I visited Carson City in June 1984 on the way from Seattle to San Diego for Scott's graduation from 12 weeks of Marine Corps Boot Camp. We came through Carson City after Crater Lake National Park, Lassen Peak National Park, and before Yosemite National Park! We spent the night in Reno just before we stopped here. I don't really remember much about Carson City except it is a small town. I plan to go back one of these days.
Facts:
Nevada was the THIRTY-SIXTH state.
Date: October 31, 1864
State Nickname: Silver State
Key Words: Silver, Stampede, Wild, Mine, Sierra, Tahoe
Carson City is not only the state capital, it is an entire county by itself! On the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, it once was called Eagle Ranch, but later was renamed for Kit Carson.
In the silver stampede days of the 1800's Carson City had some Wild West notoriety; a US Mint was located here too. The old Mint is now a museum, with a 300-foot mine tunnel running underneath the building. The state capitol was built in 1871, in Italianate style with a small octagonal silver-domed cupola that is 120 feet tall.
Tour the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see artifacts of the famed Bonanza Road; see Bowers Mansion, built in 1864 with silver mine profits. The Kit Carson Rendezvous happens in June with music and crafts; Nevada Days in October commemorates the state's admission to the Union; winter skiing is excellent in the nearby Lake Tahoe area.

Population 54,311
Elevation 4,687
