We'll stop in town and call, I said, since Aunt Sue isn't expecting us today. She gave directions, turn at the mailbox, drive the curving driveway through the woods. Aunt Sue is your Papa Don's sister, I remind Matt. Like Craig is my brother. Your grandma's brother. Aunt Sue is your grandpa's sister. Got that? She has visited you in Seattle, remember? He did.

You want some barbecue, Sue asked, first thing. Since Jack's Big Biscuit was the last thing we'd had to eat, we nodded yes. I'm sorry to pop in, I said, we've been to Gulf Shores, looking for the trailer, but we never found it. Matt didn't like the beach at all, so we're headed back home.

The trailer is still there, Sue said. Matthew! she said, how can you NOT like the beach? She got a photo album, showed him page after page of the trailer, of all the fun her kids had at the beach, fishing, relaxing in the sun. Hmmmm, said Matt.
Terry told me about building their new house, secluded on many acres of land. He has a herd of cows, too, and his daughter is a vet, an Auburn grad. He's happy in his retirement days. His four kids, Sue's three, a lot of grandchildren, time enough to enjoy it all.

I can't see to drive after dark, so we had to leave by 5. Please stay, they begged Matt. We're headed for church in a little while, and tomorrow Christy is coming to check the herd. She's going to see how many cows are pregnant. Terry described the process for doing that.

Got to go, Matt apologized, sliding quickly into the car. He quasi-smiled all the way home, snapping pictures of the countryside, and even whistled once.
