Well, I made it to Yemen. I can already tell that of all the places I have traveled, this is going to be the most eye-opening and probably challenging.
When I arrived, after having a mere 3 hours of sleep in addition to roughly a half an hour of dozing off on the plane (which did little to alleviate my sleep deprivation but produced a large puddle of drool on my right shoulder), I was welcomed by a smiling face who told me that we would have to wait a while for another student's flight to arrive. Ben, a half-German half-Egyptian, arrived within a half hour. It wasn't hard to miss him, or me for that matter, because of the clothing we wore. I thought that it would be acceptable enough to simply cover completely - wear long skirts, long shirts and cover my hair. I found out yesterday that yes, that is acceptable, but highly uncomfortable. Thusly, today and everyday, to divert the stares, I am going to wear my abaya and hijab.
Nobody here speaks English. Nobody. And it is a darn good thing as that was one of my main reasons for deciding to study in Yemen.
Ramadan started two days again and although I had no plans to convert to Islam and join in on the fasting festivities, it looks as though I may have to, at least partially. No places really serve food until sun-down, which is around 6:00. The call for the morning prayer is incredibly early...woke me up around 4 something I believe.
More to come, after a proper meal and sleep. Hopefully these two things will improve my writing as well. Ah, I can't really promise much...I am a highly inconsistent person. Cheers!
