My trip to Yemen starts...in Toledo
Entry 1 of 29 | show all | print this entry |
En route from Cincinnati to NYC, it is imperative that I stop in Toledo, my hometown. Imperative for several reasons, the most important, naturally, being that I love my family dearly and want to deliver a final farewell - a "sorry I am causing your life to be shortened by roughly 23.7 days every time I leave the country, and similarly am causing you financial distress due to an increase in spending habits to lessen the aforementioned worry, e.g. expensive sports cars, lavish vacations, days at the spa, hair coloring to cover the rapidly increasing changing to grey, facelifts, alcohol, illegal and prescription drugs." The whole gamut. Imperative also for packing reasons. My vagabond lifestyle has left evidence of my presence in several locations around the state, if not world. The remnants are intentional at times - such is the case with part of my belongings currently being stored in robb's basement, my mom's basement, and the trunk/backseat of my car. Other times the act is completely accidental. The girl I rented from in Columbus this summer will notice several new additions to her apartment: a plastic pitcher, charcoals for the grill that she doesn't have, and subtle footprints in the entryway (not entirely accidental. I blame the rain, the patch of mud outside my fire-escape and my inability to be budget my time properly, forcing me to leave without drying the footprints I had made.) Meh. In Toledo across from a piano I sit. The piano is gorgeous - a black upright Steinway. While in Tokyo, I visited the Steinway gallery. The tour, though brief, brought my mind a little closer to home and comforted me in a city where every subway stop looks distinctly like the last one - all resembling a coked-up Time Square fully equipped with seizure-inducing lights (which somehow are supposed to lure people to the store?) and hyper-active J-pop. Comfort, also, despite the nervous clerk who followed at my tail, waiting for or perhaps expecting one of my giant American arms to, without warning, begin thrashing around in the motion of a fish seconds prior to it becoming sushi and destroy the several thousand dollar pianos. I thought about asking the man if I could "test ride" one of the pianos - most likely the grand at the store entrance - but decided against it for the sake of the man's health and because I forget the verb "to play an instrument" in Japanese. The Steinway at my house, like I said, is gorgeous. Gorgeous no only in regards to its asthetic value, but also its significance in my life and my family's past. I was never been able to appreciate this particular instrument until I had long since stopped playing...on a regular basis that is. I play occasionally, though I wish I could play more, but such is the case with so many of my interests. Tangent: lights on timers weird me out. So I leave on Thursday of next week. The 14th of September. Before then, I will be in nyc hanging out, eating peanut butter sometimes on bread, sometimes straight from the jar, most likely sleeping a lot, and other assorted tasks that will not be exciting to write nor read about. Thusly, I will probably not post again for another week. If I do, however, post before then, I highly advise that you refrain from reading it knowing my upcoming schedule and the lame life that I lead when I am not traveling to "exotic" locations around the world such as Yemen. Lame indeed. 'Tis all for now. Carry on.

i'm glad to hear your on the move again.
here's a tip: if you arrive in a city you know little about, immediately find a drug/heath care related store. make sure they carry adult diapers. gahndi said that a culture can be judged on it's moral progress by how it's animals are treated. i dissagree. i think a culture is progressive when it rewards its elderly for their contributions by maki... show all
