BaHrain is a lovely little place. There is so much to write about my time spend there, yet I wish I had a chance to write about it while I was there. Meh, this will have to do (some two months later...). So anyway, I went to BaHrain with my friend Haji who was born and raise there. His parents are Persians so he is fortunate to speak Farsi, Arabic and English. I shake my angry fist at people like him and also at my mom (not really mom!) for not having forced Spanish or some other language down my throat at an early age. Actually, I wish my mother had been fluent in 7 languages and each day of the week would have been themed..."Today is French Friday...come over here so mommy can draw a curly mustache on your face" or "Spanish Sunday! I know we normally go to church around this time, but salsa dancing anyone? Anyone?" Ahh well, I guess asking her to be fluent in 7 languages might be asking a little too much. And further, I think my mom raised me alright. Ok, fine, I award two points for my mom.
Anywho, back to the topic at hand...BaHrain (in which the "H" is actually pronounced...none of this Ba Rain stuff.). BaHrain is quite a small island. It takes roughly 45 minutes to travel from one side to the other and I found out while I was there that BaHrain is actually a cluster of thirty something islands all connected by bridges. Regardless, I am still going to talk about BaHrain as "the island" although that is technically not pc. meh. On the island is a fairly large U.S. military base. Haji told me that upon visiting BaHrain, I might understand why some Middle Easterners have such a bad opinion of Americans...and boy was he right. I am not going to generalize and say that all the U.S. military men on BaHrain were pigs, but the majority that I saw were. Haji's friend set me up in a very nice villa for two nights, which happened to be very close to the military base. Further, many American military men were staying in the same complex as me. I hate to be critical, but I am going to be...these men were loud, obnoxious, rude to the local culture and further disguisting. Each man had his own personal prostitute who followed him everywhere...to the pool, to the restaurant, to the bar, etc. I was extremely disguisted and ashamed. Aside from that, I had a wonderful visit to BaHrain. haji and I traveled to the desert in BaHrain where we visited the Tree of Life which is a giant tree in the middle of nowhere. Some say that the tree is haunted, others say it is an act of god, others think that the branches reach so far below the earth that they gain water and nutrients from a deep underground acquifer. Whatever the reason, it was an interesting sight to see. We also went to Bait al Qu'ran which means House of the Quran. On display in this museum were Qurans from various centuries and locations around the global. The history behind some of these holy books is amazing and the art and writing that accompanied them was beautiful. I'm sure there is more to write, but needless to say, I cannot remember at this time. Perhaps I will write more to this post later, but probably not...yippie!
