The bittersweet nature of study-abroads
Entry 20 of 33 | show all | print this entry |
As weird as I find some aspects of Dubai's society such as the way the government works or the flashy, monetarily-rich and tourist nature of it, I am going to really miss this place. I guess it is much more the people than the place. I have made some wonderful friends and sadly I do not think I will get to see many of them again, especially not in the United States. Most of them have researched into visiting or migrating to the United States, but after 9/11 any opportunity was pretty much destroyed. For my Iranian friends, the chance of them ever being able to visit the U.S. is slim to none. U.S. visas for foreigners are pretty scarce compared to elsewhere in the world, and being from the Middle East, as you can imagine, is just about the worst place to come from in regards to obtaining a visa. Knowing this does not help calm my sadness connected with my upcoming departure and makes the present seem much more valuable.
