We probably would have ended up with more sleep at the airport but we did get our beer-drinking list off to a bit of a start.

I ended up with a moron checking me in for the Deathstar flight to Singpore.  She wanted to see my itinerary.  I should have got out a piece of paper and written a few cities on it as for starters, itinerary doesn’t have to imply some sort of officially issued one.  Secondly, it can't be that difficult to create a fake one and print it out.  Thirdly... we've moved to paperless tickets!  What's this itinerary rubbish?  She claimed that Singapore immigration would need to see one, but there's a road from Singapore to Malaysia... do people leaving by road need to get a certificate from a taxi driver before they're allowed in?  Anyway, I argued enough that she gave in...

Flight was great as Tim had chosen a couple of seats in the last row of a section so we had no-one behind us.  You wouldn't think it'd make a difference but I think it did. Plus there was plenty of leg-room. 

Tim's declared a no-English rule for the trip and it started on the plane.  I managed to stick to the no-English rule by speaking Indonesian to the air-hostess... my first-time speaking Indonesian with a real person.  I had to hope she wouldn't say too much then switch to English when I didn't understand.  Luckily we always had Esperanto to fall back on...

Jetstar is classic.  You have to pay for everything.  To get on the plane first, for food, for drink, head-sets... But it is cheap.  And the reality is that it's much smoother without air-hostesses and trolleys cluttering up the aisles as they try to feed the entire plane.  In fact I think I'd actually pay extra for a flight with no drink or food service.  Just let everyone drink water and keep the aisles free.  It also means that you probably don't get woken up by someone trying to give you food... and even more of a bonus you don't get tempted to eat about 3 desserts during a flight.

Immigration in Singapore was smooth as was customs.  And of course, no request to see my itinerary.

We took the train/subway into town and even managed to find the street with our hotel on the neighbourhood map at the subway exit so we walked to our hotel. 

On the way to the hotel Tim spotted the morgue so with his usual brand of humour suggested we might want to look for Andrew seeing we hadn't heard from him for so long...

But as we were checking in at the hotel, we turned around and there they were sitting there.  They had already been waiting for us to turn up.  And withing a minute or so a friend of mine whom I'd already met in Singapore a few years beforehand turned up so we were set to drop off our stuff and head out for food and... beers.

The rooms are pretty modern but tiny... and the bathroom has the toilet and washbasin basically in the shower cubicle, that's how small it is.

So here we are in Singapore...

After a long session outside eating and drinking we went in search of a karaoke bar but gave up when we finally found one but couldn't get in because some of us were wearing shorts... inevitably I gave them a blast for being so stupid as to expect people living somewhere 3 degress north of the equator not to wear shorts!

So, one more beer and some noodles and we called it a night.

I could never understand why Singapore has Tiger (Thai-ger) Beer and Thailand has Singa Beer.

Re your remark about not having drinks served on flights - what are you some kind of fundamentalist kill-joy?

In 1994 I flew from Cape Town to Cairo by Egypt-Air which had (and has) a "no-alcohol served aboard" rule. Sensibly realising that their planes would probably have flown half-empty had they stuck religiously to this policy, as we were boarding everyone was offered 2x250ml dinkies of SA`wine (one red, one white). Then followed a major bartering session as passengers exchanged white for red (as we did) and vice-versa. However we soon noticed that many of our fellow passengers (esp the Boers) were opening full bottles of whisky and brandy which they were mixing with the free soft drinks served board.

The (ostensibly non-drinking Muslim) cabin staff were totally co-operative with this infidel behaviour. As you could imagine it was a very festive flight..!
