there was noone in the seat next to me, nor in any of the seats nearby.
The first Qantas meal was one of the most unappetising things I've ever had in my life - both visually and taste-wise. The second meal wasn't quite so bad...
Once in Shanghai, I was about to sleep at the terminal and in fact I'd already asked whether that was an option.
But some bloke had asked where I was going and I thought I'd lost him but he'd actually followed me so I asked him about hotels.
In some cities. these blokes that hang around at the airport or station are real pests but some, like this bloke, do a real service. He drove me to a nearby hotel for 3 dollars and was pretty informative as well. The government should pay him to hang around.
Turns out that besides the big, expensive airport-hotel there are lots of smaller ones very close to the airport. Not that there's anything else nearby. They must cater mainly to passengers in transit.
Airport Ramada is $200, my hotel was $40. Quite good with a free shuttle in the morning. plus no need to put up with snobby front desk staff.
The highlight was the tiny restaurant across the road. I felt like trying every dish on the menu it all seemed so enticing.
I ended up having three bottles of beer (610 ml bottles) and some strange dish of celery and shredded pork, an aparagus like vegetable and potatoes and the superb Hang Zhou beef.
The last dish is beef with tiny green chillies There were at least 60 of them in this dish. Not too hot as to be uncomfortable but just right. A taste sensation.
