Sydney was certainly a strange place yesterday. Half the streets in the centre blocked off; so-called pilgrims absolutely everywhere
and security guarding the Catholic cathedral.
Several aspects I found rather disturbing... Is the predominant colour - red and yellow - the traditional colour of these events - or did McDonalds pay a fortune for the subliminal advertising?
They are all wearing name tags around their necks, but I passed some with VIP on their tags. How do you have some Christians better than others?
Then there's the
huge merchandising shop... Combine that with the fact that these pigrims have no doubt paid something as they all have the same backpacks and one has to assume that someone is making a fortune. Perhaps they can use the name McPope and make some real money? Unfortunately I doubt the poor will see much of it... it will more likely go to the next poor victims of the next scandals to come to light - sent by God no doubt to test whether the faithful really have faith!
For something that is ostensibly so spiritual there was an aweful lot of flag-waving. Very tribal...
I tried to get into the cathedral to see whether entry was only for paid-up customers... but apparently God goes to bed at 9:30. Why does God need so much security anyway... surely he can look after himself!?
Anyway, I shouldn't be too critical of it all. It really is quite a remarkable event... A modern, Catholic Woodstock. And I think that that is one of the main attractions. People just flock to these events because they just have to be able to say they were there.
