A slight problem to start with, the driver who was supposed to pick us up from the airport got her days wrong and was not there. Luckily she got there in 15 minutes and all was good. Checked in to the hotel - its expensive but fantastic and great location. From our room we have what real estate agents would call "Central Patk glimpses".
As per our standard process in a new city, we did an open top bus trip. Great overview and way to get your bearings. As you can hop on and hop off, you can see a lot quickly. We managed to see World Trade Centrer site, Statue of Liberty, China Town and Little Italy plus of course 5th Avenue, Times Square (Triangle?), Flat Iron, Rockefeller and Empire State Buildings etc
We even went as far as Brooklyn in one direction and Harlem in the other direction. Saw the church that Marvin recommends - we are ready for our Sunday mass next week now
For food we have realised that the Green Deli at our back door is great for early morning or late night snacks (thanks Alex) and also the Food Hall at the Plaza next door. Bit of a misnomer to call it a food hall - a bit like DJ's basement in Melbourne but bigger and better food
We knew it was going to be cold but minus 2 C at 10am was a bit cooler than we were accustomed to. Multiples layers works well but its a pain when you go into a shop and have to peel it all off...the beanie, the gloves, the big coat, the medium coat....
Another of our big stops was the Museum of Natural History. Was a v pleasant but cool 20 minute walk thru Central Park from the hotel. We spent a few hours there, it could have been a few days. Amazing place. After watching Ben Stiller in "Night at the Museum" I kept expecting to see some animals running thru the halls - fortunately not. We also picked up our NY City Pass there - gives you good prices and front of line at lots of places.
We decided we wanted to see a couple of shows - not too fussed what we saw. A hawker came up to us and I was trying to drag Sandy away when he explained he giving us a voucher you take to the theatre and get 50% off
I also noticed an ad for a tennis exibition match and the G..not the MCG but the MSG (Madison Square Gardens). They had Federer v Roddick and Wozniacki v Sharapova...so we jumped online and managed to get 2 tickets
So last night we headed off to Madison Square Gardens - tennis was great. Pretty light hearted, a few trick shots, lots of fun, the two women even danced with randoms from the audience. The strangest sight was the ballboys - all were grown men, some taller than the players???huh? Odd especially as the night was to promote getting more kids into tennis.
The spooky part was that Ben Stiller had obvioulsy followed us from the Museum of Natural History and turned up at the tennis. Also saw Rory McIlroy (World #1 golfer) - he played one point filling in for his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.
Tonight we went to Godspell - v interesting theatre called Circle in the Square. A round theatre stage and audience all around the actors, different
We also managed to spend a few hours shopping and I got 6 socks (well you could say 3 pairs I guess). Sandy managed to get several pairs of jeans. I did manage a visit to B&O
We went to the top of the Rockefeller Centre - great view and as always Sandy was a little braver than me. I went outside on level 71, Sandy went much closer to the edge and up one extra flight of stairs
Another interesting thing to know is that the City of NY over the last few years has been running a grading system for all food establishments. A score of A means all food made is used same day and the place is clean. A score of B, means clean but some food is not 'same day fresh'. A score of C means you close up shop pretty quickly. Guy telling us said that it has raised the standard of the average food place. Good concept
May have to visit Apple store tomorrow...we also have planned most of tomorrow at the Met
