After a long time talking about our lives, we were able to get all the way to the NE-CO border without stopping for sleep. I had been driving all the way from Minnesota all the way to about Kearney, NE. At that point, Randy tried his hand at driving a manual transmission system. He's done it before, even on my old car, but he's been out of practice. The first few times he stalled. I had to teach him how to restart the car and what he needed to do to get moving. He had some trouble with not keeping the gas when he was shifting or trying to add the brake while he was putting in the clutch. Eventually he got over these things. His shifting was still very rough though and didn't have the clutch-accelerator balance yet. But we were at least moving and I was able to rest a bit while. Nonetheless, we were both very tired so we stopped at the Colorado tourist center to sleep. I think we only stopped there for about an hour. I couldn't sleep after all the caffeine in my body so I just went onward. The thing about Western Nebraska and NE Colorado is the smell. It's like sanitation. I always thought it was just badly designed rest areas, but I think it was the farming communities. Just too many of them. There's some hills and it's not all flat, but Randy had been raving about the drive through Colorado the whole time. In fact, I'm certain that part of the reason we ended up going SW is because Randy really wanted to drive through that area.

We stopped at a classic gas station as well. It was like one of those roadside diners you see in the films and everything seemed outdated, but it sufficed because the folk out there didn't need anything fancy. In fact, they had to use upside down fives for twos because they couldn't afford the extra numbers.
