I knew what I was going to do that day on my first day in Antigua. I
was going to spend time at the market. And I pretty much spent all day
there shopping. I needed to buy a few things, but I knew that there
would be cheap souvenirs there anyway. And I love bargaining at markets
too, so it was very fun day for me. I started off getting scarves and
masks and a watch, but then soon enough I wandered into a different
section - which happened to be the Artisan's market. There's the
regular one for food and regular items, and then there was a second
market. It was crazy big. I ended up buying some stuff I didn't even
want, but I thought it was too good of a deal to give up. Maybe I was a
sucker for buying so much, but I had fun and it was good quality stuff.

Originally I was supposed to head off toward Tikal the next day on a
bus in Guate. But I was so enchanted by Antigua and knew there was so
much to do within the city and nearby like Chichicastenago or Lago
Atitlan, so I realized that I needed to have a flight out of Guate to
Flores instead of trying to ride the bus over there. I knew I was going
to spend a lot more money to do a flight, but that extra day was so
much more worth it, in my mind.

And for lunch I found this amazing place with amazing cheap churrasco.
5 bucks for a flank steak and soup and salad. Perfect. Then I went back
to the room and the mother showed me pictures of the alfombra she made
for semana santa. Over there, they do a lot of celebration for Easter
Week and she decorated her alfombra interestingly. She was really proud
of it and it looked like it took a lot of time to complete. She also
told me of some neat places to go to around town. So I wandered around
some more in the market and I stayed until it closed. Everyone was
striking prices so far down at that hour. They really wanted to get rid
of some of the stuff. So of course I took advantage of it.
Unfortunately, I got lost trying to exit the market. So what happened
is that eventually all the garbage scavengers came into the area and I
just tried to exit as quickly as possible. A bit scary at first with
the whole market being enveloped by darkness while the utility crew
came in, but I managed to escape unscathed.
