August 5th, 2006, Sat.

Went out to vineyards today, took pictures of the villages to show you.We went over to Heike's grandparents home. She was baking plum cakes for Sunday dinner. We will return for coffee and cake on Sunday. Her whole family meets there on Sunday to eat. It is a small place (which most seem to be over here), with nice area in the back for eating outside. Her grandfather has vegetables and flowers planted that cover all space available in the small yard. They have raised 8 children here. Her grandfather watched over Eisenhower when he was here before he was president. He also helped another General here that was at that time a 4 star general. He said once when it was very cold Eisenhower's wife bought him some hot tea. He is fond of telling the story. There is a very big American community here and also military personnel in the area - they call that area little America (some of you probably know this).

Up in the vineyards there is a path that has the Stations of the Cross (path of Jesus's life). I stopped and took pictures of some of them. There is a picture of Heike kissing Jesus. These stone crosses were put there long ago, couldn't get exact dates, but one of the chapels had a date of 1630's.

The local wine festivals started today. They have restaurants that are only open for 2 months at a time that serve food and wine from property. They call these broom restaurants and they are only allowed to be open during certain months. We are going there tomorrow night with couch surfer from California.

Heike helps instruct a family that competes in horse shows. I stayed home during the competition today, but they came and got me for the celebration. Champagne of course for all. The 2 daughters won first place in their categories so a toast is a must for all. I took some video of the horses snuggling. I did not know horses snuggled, they rubbed and licked each other until one of them bit to hard. The girls say that is how they do every time. Also including a clip of them just talking in stables, or course they speak German. The parents asked could I come and stay about 3 weeks to make their daughters use the English language during the time for practice. When I was there the had their daughters use English for conversation. ( I made it clear I do not speak the queens English ha).

See Ya,

The pictures will be added in the next day, problems with wireless, Ben is coming by train today and he will fix it.

I am typing on a German keyboard and it is different from ours, sorry, hoping spell check will help. The Y is where our Z is, and stuff is just in the wrong place.
