August 4, 2006

OK people I have done something now. I have actually found the slowest and oldest train in all of Europe to ride to Munich on. No joking I am crawling through the hills of the Czech Republic. Seriously I could probably go out on the platform between the cars and shake some countryman's hand as I passed in their town. It is beautiful, but really folks I could get the same effect with a little speed under the wheels of this train. Now I know why it is going to take 6 hours to get to Munich. The only way faster would have been walking and I have a new blister on my foot, so that was out. This blister - I would not have it if I had not spent the last years of my life pampering my feet. It is on the outside of my big toe, you know where other people have a nice callus but I don't because I go get someone to scrub them off every month. What was I thinking - to think all this time my feet were trying to prepare and I went against nature. I'm paying the price. This train makes the Amtrak east coast connection look luxurious. I am not sure but I believe when I flush the toilet (oh well step on the peddle and open the hole in the bottom of the toilet) I see the ground - really.

Woke up to a really cool morning, I am guessing 60's, maybe colder. It is a nice break from the heat. Also my cold is worse. Throat, nose burning, chest sort of heavy -yes a cold. Does anyone know how bird flu starts ? Just joking mom,,,,,,,,

Sharing private (?) car with man that owns cosmetic company, born and raised in Prague, family is in Vienna. Travels most of the week , home on weekends- nice man.

Fell asleep and was woke up by border patrol "passport please" ( I tried to write this the way they say it and the computer keeps fixing it) I am on the German border in the mountains, not sure what town but it is pretty here. Americans in the car beside me, spoke with them. They are from Wisconsin and their wives are leaving for a girls trip to Paris when they get home. We are stopping at a train station in Cham (Oberpf) I will look on the map to see where I am. They just gave is a invitation over the speaker to enjoy the Regional Express Train - the man in the car with me translated and we are having a good laugh. If this is express I hope I don't find their slow one. It has rained most of the day and I don't know if it is cold because the weather is changing or if it is cold because I am in a mountain region. Either way I like it, makes for a pretty ride.

I'm in the Munich train station, it is big, like an airport. Found train ,got in first class, do not have reservation, but told 3 times I do not need one. But you know with my luck I am going to be asked to move. Heard someone say if the light over seat was not blinking it was not reserved, we will see. I am on another one of those fancy ICE trains, fast and fancy, love it. So I am going from the slowest train that is offered to one of the fastest. We are going 239 km/hr, someone do the math. Will have to change trains in Mannheim, Germany in a few hours and then to Heidelberg where Heike will pick me up.
There was only 6 minutes between my connection I ran and had to slap at the door to get it to open and not leave me, so much for resting my knee today. Made it to Heidelberg , and Heike picked me up, not sure how long I will be here. I am pretty sick with something, throat, nose, body hurts. She is making me some tea to fix me. Her home is in a village outside of town about 20 km in the middle of a vineyard . Met her last week in Vienna , she has traveled around the world and is planning her next trip. Her picture is back in the pictures from Vienna at the picnic. Everyone has been so nice to me, I am blessed.
