Well, I am here...I think....
Entry 5 of 24 | show all | print this entry |
Well, Afteer hanging in the Dallas airport for 5 hours (this airport is like a museum), changing departure gates three times, and being told my Canadian visa (uh, its still a visa) couldnt be used to get money out of their American ATMs, I finally made it to Guatemala city last night. The airport in Guatemala is like being dropped off in a half-finished building, and I just had to follow everyone else to get out. I met a nice man on the airplane who didn{t speak English, he was going back to Guatemala and he told me I spoke Spanish really well..then again, after our conversation I think he thinks I am a fish trapper from the coast, who has a sister with one eye, but at least we were having a real convo in Spanish. He told me to watch out for thieves, the guy who drove me to the hostel I was staying at told me the same thing, and the lady who ran the hostel told me to watch my back at the bus station. So you can imagine how comfortable I looked at the Guatemala city Bus station holding on to my bag so tight my knuckles were cracking and trying to look nonchalant. Anyway, I got on the bus, for four hours we drove down a bunch of roads smaller than a sidewalk, jumped out to use the washroom and came out to the busdriver leaving me behind...thank God I didn{t have my backpack on me so I could run faster and chase the dude...serves me right for having a small bladder. I am in Xela now, its definitely got character, kind of like a poorer version of Guanajuato. I am on a mission to get some money out of the bank. This should be interesting.... I start classes tomorrow, and I think I am going to stay there for a week and a bit, do classes in the morning and volunteer in the afternoon, then head off to Antigua to volunteer. Hope you are all doing well, hasta luego!
