Our travel went unbelievably well. It was long but not a single hiccup - we were both even able to get a little sleep on the Amsterdam to Tanzania leg.
Talk about deja vu... it was surreal being back at tiny Kilimanjaro national airport two years later. Even more bizarre was our stay in the same lodge that kicked off the Kilimanjaro trek in Arusha. Same great breakfast and Tusker bear still rocks.
Anyway, we had our pre-safari brief this morning at 9:00 am and were off shortly there-after for the "cultural center". This is basically an Africa high-end store where they try to sell you ebony carvings and tanzanite at crazy prices. They got me for a pair of stud earrings for Jen two years ago so, sufficed to say, I learned my lesson.
Next we began our two-hour drive in our Defender 110 for the Tarangire park. It's a 1,000 square mile expansive area and it did not disappoint. It is our first day and we have seen elephant, water buffalo, dik dik, antelope, gazelle, warthogs, wildebeests, zebra, giraffe, monkeys, hyenas, and about a hundred different kinds of birds. We got some amazing photos although our new Nikon with the telephoto lens was put to shame by our land rover-mate who had a lens the length of a baseball bat. Yes, call it camera envy.
We got back to our nyumba (camp) around 6:00 and Thomson, as always, impressed. Our tent is more like a hotel room, complete with a filed shower, lav, and a full sized bed with linens and solar powered lcd lamps. It's just amazing.
Dinner was great with rice, lamb casserole, fried pumpkin, potato and leek soup, and even a birthday cake for one of the other folks on safari who was nice enough to share it with Jenn given her birthday was last Friday. The beer and South African cab weren't bad, either.
Our wake up call is 6:30 tomorrow so that we hit the park before the real heat. I'm sitting here watching the election results (what's up so far) and blogging... how amazing.
I'll try to post some pics tonight if I can...
