We left Yoschi’s Hotel and Restaurant at 10 am and the scenery was more of the same. It took 45 mins to drive back down the mountain and the countryside reminded me that it was a bit like Nepal with the steep slopes that have been terraced. The scattered trees, houses and little villages with wood piled outside kind of added to this distant memory of my 1994 trip to Nepal. One can only marvel at steeply cultivated hills with crops: spring onions and cabbage on the upper slopes of the Tengger Valley.

We were suppose to travel to the Ijen Plateau but with the area closed through volcanic activity we instead headed to Kalibaru, East Java.

Lunch stop was in the city of Jember at Taman Mangli Indah: Nasi Ayam is rice and chicken plus a Pineapple Juice = 60,000 Rp (NZ $8 or US $6).

By 4 pm we had arrived at our overnight stay at Margo Utomo and a welcome tamarin drink was waiting for us. This place is a lovely setting after a long day.

Dinner cost 113,000 Rp (NZ $15 or US $13) and for this it was a glass of Honeydew Melon Juice 18,000 Rp, Lemon Chicken 60,000 Rp and again a treat of Ginger Crapes with palm syrup 18,500 Rp. Don’t forget the 21% service tax!
