Just after 7.30 am a local bus took us only as far as the intercity bus terminal where we boarded a larger bus and left at 8.15 am bound for Surabaya. More than enough room for my legs, in fact more room than some airlines that I have flown in.
The all day trip went by very quickly as there was always something to look at. With it being Sunday, noticed people walking as a community group plus groups of cyclists. The cyclists you can tell by the cyclist type clothing that they were wearing plus their bikes were either mountain bikes or racing bikes, not the everyday commuter and often single speed bikes that I had seen on other days.
The road was single lane and at times we would be speeding along and then the next minute down to a crawl and then away again. I admire the bus driver as often he would overtake many vehicles and then be back in the line just before the oncoming vehicles. No horns or sudden action - the other vehicles would just let him back in.
Many of the shops and small local industry places were closed as we drove by. In fact the whole trip seem to be like going through one continuous city or town. It was at times hard to tell where one town finished and the next one started. I can see why Indonesia is so populated.
Just a 30 minute lunch stop and we were away again. The lunch was included with the ticket and we were warned about it being very simple which it certainly was. I choose the grilled chicken and rice. Oh yes, you had a cup of sweet tea as well.
Then at Surabaya we changed to 2 private minibus for the hour’s journey up to Pusat Pendidikan Lingkungan Hidud (PPLH) at the Seloliman Nature Reserve arriving there at 5.15 pm.
Being up in the mountains, we stopped to see the sun set below the distant hills. I didn’t quite capture it properly as the sun dropped so quickly below the horizon after we had stopped the vans and got out. At least the several taken from the moving vehicle will remind me of this moment.
The peaceful Seloliman Nature Reserve is situated on the slopes of the sacred Penanggungan volcano. Established in 1990 as Indonesia’s first environmental education centre. Being on the edge of a tropical forest, the fresh mountain air was cooler and a refreshing break from the last week.
Marilla celebrated today an important birthday milestone. To be travelling all day in a bus is not exactly how one wants to remember this day.
Evening closed to the sound of the many insect animals. No TV. Peaceful and blissful.
More photos of this really peaceful place in tomorrow's entry. Don't you love the outdoor bathroom!
