Bus 1 for the airport left after 8 am and I was expecting to be on the morning 8.45 am Lan Chile flight out of Ushuaia back to Buenos Aires. Somehow Lan Chile had decided to rebook me and Gouwe, the other GAP member who did the End of the Earth trip with me, onto the evening’s flight without advising GAP. Gouwe had an evening international connection to make.

We were waitlisted for the 11.45 am Lan Chile flight but no luck.

Likewise we were waitlisted on Aer Argentina afternoon flights but with 15 passengers waitlisted, the chances of us making it were so slim. So the decision was make to head back to town and be back at the airport that evening.

Not what I had wanted, an extra half a day in sunny Usuahia but …. The only thing on my "still to do" list was to see the prison museum. It was closed on the embarkation day and I was not the best on our first free half day after the Beagle Channel cruise some 2 weeks ago. Other travellers had remarked favourably on the prison and for 60 pesos / US $15 / NZ $ 20 this was well worth while. Part of the museum is now an art gallery and very modern works were on display. They had left one wing as it was and I somehow understand why so few prisoners did not try to escape. The prison had no walls around it. Being so cold the chances of surviving out in the outdoors were slim and many gave themselves up after several days on the loose.

Back to the airport just after 6 pm and by 10.30 pm I had made it to Buenos Aires and back to my old room 606 in Hotel Wilton. Home sweet home for another 2 nights.

Thanks Nadia for all your hard work in arranging the various changes, transfers etc. and ensuring that we were on the plane for Buenos Aires.
