Boom and soon the waves came slowly towards us. Another calving (glacier ice falling down into the water) in Andvord Bay in Neko Harbour. We turned the kayak into the coming wave and rode out the small waves. Yes, I managed to capture several sequences of the glacier calving. Trying to anticipate where the next ice face will fall was a real guessing game.

From the water we could see some of the land lovers run and then slide on their bums downwards. I was quite content to be sitting in the kayak watching them.

We landed and stood on the actual Antarctica continent ie mainland. Tick that one off now.

Expedition Log

by Scott MacPhail & Osi Shahaf

We made our way to our afternoon landing spot, Neko Harbour, which would be our first actual landing on the continent of Antarctica. We were all in high spirits and excited about this event. Just how many people have set foot on the White Continent?

Our groups were called one by one, and there we were, on the continent, the 7th for many of us. We were once again surrounded by our friends the Gentoo, in the most idyllic of settings, with a massive glacier to our left in Andvord Bay. Most of us walked up a hill for a breathtaking view of the bay, and we reverted to our childhood once again as some tobogganed down the hill. We all had a chance to sit and watch Weddell seals lazing away the afternoon, sleeping most of the time, but every now and then they would wake up, take a look at us and then scratch their bellies and go back to sleep.
