This entry with images of day 1 of the 3 days spent in Torre Del Paine which is a key attraction to take this GAP "End of the Earth" trip.

Joys of travelling and mother nature not assisting. The cold blustery wind is a issue and probably my undoing. Over half the group got sick with all (most) of us having the same symptoms.

On day 1 we got to see the magnificent 3 pillars: Mirador Las Torres as they had been shrouded in clouds for the previous few days. But what a journey to get to the base of them. First we had to retrace our steps from the overnight stay at Puerto Natales.

In the end it was a 9 hour return trip and at our lunch stop in the shelter of a refugee (mountain lodge to me), we decided to continue for at least another hour in the relative shelter of the trees in the valley before deciding if we would make the last hour's climb up the exposed ridge.

Thank goodness the wind had not increased much so we made the decision to try to push on and made it in only 45 mins. Behind the shelter of the large rocks, time to awe at the sight in front of us. For me it was the journey to get up there. By now the clouds had lifted some more so our view while still hazy, but netherless really great. I can understand how the mountain climbers love this place.

The thought of a cold beer spurred me back to the lodge.

We had the use that evening of GAP’s own camp site with tents already pitched for us. Somehow we needed one more tent because of the odd number between sexes.

Jose the cook here had all the little Christmas trimmings you could ask for. Plenty of Lemon Sour and nibbles to go round in the white Mongolian style yurt. Most of us shared the different ways we each celebrated Christmas in our home countries.

The meals were in the neighbouring wooden building and while it was still cold and blowing outside at least inside we were toasty warm.
