Where I stayed
We have 17 people in our group, from the US and UK. For the first time on one of my trips there are more men than women, and we have teachers, medical trainers, nutrition experts… a big variety. It does make for interesting conversation.
We had a short city tour of Nicaragua’s capital, Managua, but there is only really the locations of the revolution in 1979 and lovely views of the lake. The lake is a crater lake and is surrounded by volcanoes
Then it was about an hour and a half by coach to leon, with some lovely views but I was a bit disappointed in Leon. It wasn’t that interesting, altought I enjoyed the walk arund the market and the art gallery wasn’t bad. The churches were very simple and not as ornate as we all thought they would be. So about 3.30pm we set off back south for Granada, and arrived about 6 to a lovely hotel called The Alhambre. It is very grand and the xmas decorations make it look spectacular. So we have lucked out on a good hotel here and I think we will be back for new year’s eve. I haven’t had a chance to see much of Granada yet, but in the square there was a lovely xmas tree and a real santa claus was sitting by it!
First impressions are that Nicaragua is so much richer than Honduras. All the roads are paved and the gas stations are just like at home. They don’t seem to rely so much on the corner shops, called pulperias. The prices are similar to Honduras though, and there are 30 cordoba to one Uk pound (Honduras was 30 lempira to one pound).
Today, Monday, we are off on a day tour to Masaya volcano, Masaya handicraft market and then to visit a fort. Should be fun! Hope to get pics on later! Adios!
