After more than 20 years closed, the old and infamous Capitol Theatre has only just reopened in the past month after a history of entertainers including the Grateful Dead, PInk Floyd, the Rolling Stones and David Bowie to Janis Joplin.
The train ride north to Port Chester from New York was around 45 minutes from Grand Central station. It's a classic suburban town outside a major city hub. Gritty, with a variety of convenience stores, cinemas, bottle shops, Mexican restaurants and of course, this amazing old theatre.
Inside the theatre was gorgeous
I was not disappointed. Front row seats - a mere 2 metres maximum from the man himself. An Irish guy called Foy Vance was the support act, who was on for around 30 minutes. Quite enjoyable.
As soon as the concert began with David, pretty much the front rows and half the theatre were up on their feet dancing. Security initially tried to get us down up the front, but they had no chance and in the end gave up (even though the girl beside me was threatened with a little eviction!). I think the security guys knew there would be a riot if there were any interference with this fan club’s enjoyment!
Across the other side of the theatre in the second row there was one other guy who was a classic
Whilst I had no photos with David Gray, I can confidently say eye contact was made several times and he was looking over at Talia, Ben and I dancing often and having a bit of a grin at us. One happy woman! Talia and Ben lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and were legends – they have seen David 12 times in concert and were going to see him again in two days at Connecticut. Lucky buggers! Oh, to be American and have bands at your whim so often!
Tracks played were Draw the Line, Fixative, Nemesis, Babylon, Sail Away, Please Forgive Me, Shine, Lately, Kathleen, Jackdaw, Flame Turns Blue, World to Me, My Oh My, The One I Love. (Not in that order!)....and I am sure I have forgotten one or two.
At the end, Talia and Ben gave us a ride back into Manhattan – which saved us a good hour as the only train back was the 11.50pm and the concert finished at 10.45pm
The only thing missing from the concert was Des and Cath as I know how much they would have gone off with excitement as well – particularly after Festival Hall in Brisbane before it was demolished. I am sure he will be in Australia again soon…we can relive it again then! (You can come too Helene).
If there were a highlight of this trip, it is most certainly this night!
I am now obsessively playing DG on the IPOD everywhere. A true fanatic.
