We slept till 9.30 leaving us 15 minutes before the free breakfast closed. I guess this ensured we were both up early.
So we took a 20 minute drive to Valkenburg. It seemed much of Dutch history was centered around this one hill. Since the 12 century many have fought over this dominating position between the German and Belgian border. On the hill has stood a castle taking many shapes and sizes over the centuries. Underneath the hill was a series of tunnels were Marlite stone was extracted. But moreso the tunnels provided the castle with supplies during entrapment, an escape route and hiding place, especially noted in the 2nd world war. American soldiers & Jews hid there and understood the strategic position of Valkenburg during this war.
We visited the tunnels and the remains of the old castle. We wondered the old streets with many stone houses and castles. Walked into the country to old estates. Returning back to the center where I shopped to cook Marjan and Roy Thai for dinner.
And Thai I cooked them when we returned home!
Afterwards we watched 'Collateral' that Marjan had recorded a year earlier from TV. After an hour and a half the film was stopped for a scheduled news broadcast were the recorded stopped. And after that we never saw the end. How frustrating having a film cut short right at the action scene!
