On one of our days in Bruges we planned to take a day cycling tour through the countryside, but when I called to book it I found out it wasn't running that day. We hummed and hawed about what to do, and eventually ended up renting bikes and doing the trip on our own. The bike trails are very well established and the city has a map of the region detailing ideal routes, so it was very easy to do. Our trip started out following the river out of the city, and very soon we were in rural Belgium. It was so cool to see pretty little cottages and windmills and endless fields. Our trip was about 40km in total - 20 there and 20 back. Our destination was the town of Sluis in The Netherlands. We thought it was pretty cool to bike over the border. Once in Sluis we walked around for a while and then had poffertjes and waffles in a busy little restaurant. The ride back was a bit more difficult with the sun setting and our stomachs full, but we slept very well that night.
