When a lot of people think of Germany, they think of Oktoberfest. Munich is the city that hosts this grand event and while we've been told the city is quite the sight to behold during Oktoberfest, for the rest of the time it seems fairly average. While we were here we did a side trip to Fussen, which was far and away the most interesting part of the visit. There is some pretty cool history in this area, especially for WWII buffs – for instance, we saw the square where Hitler made one of his most famous speeches, and there was of course the famous incident at the Olympic games here. And there were definitely some pretty good restaurants serving typical Bavarian cuisine, and even more delicious Bavarian beer.

Like other cities, we partook in a walking tour, and were told of the main sights, like the Rathaus (this is effectively the German word for City Hall – I find it amusing that in English it would suggest that a place full of politicians is a house full of rats…), and the "most expensive street in Germany". Not sure if that last one is exactly true, but our guide took us down a street full of stores that were not exactly in our price range.

Overall though, the city seemed to lack some of the excitement that other major German cities had. There was nothing wrong with a Munich, it had good food, good beer and enough sites to see to keep you busy for a day or two, but still it seemed to leave something to be desired… But then again, it’s a bit tough to compete with a city like Berlin.
