Dresden is split in half by a river, with the 'aldstadt' to the south and the ‘neustadt’ to the north – old and new towns, respectively. We stayed in Neustadt, which is a cool, student-y, bohemian area. Our hostel was pretty cool, with a nice bar/café below it, and a shisha place across the street. At night all of the closed shopfronts’ window ledges were covered with people drinking their super cheap beer from the corner store – and it’s all legal! We joined in for one beer and felt pretty scandalous.
The best part of our visit was definitely renting bikes for the day and cycling down by the river. There is a nice bike path and there were lots of people out enjoying the sunshine. We also checked out the sights of the old town. The most interesting was a big beautiful church that had been bombed in the war and then rebuilt. Now, we’ve seen lots of these, and they’re all lovely, but you do get a bit tired of churches after a while. What made this one special is that when they rebuilt it they used the remaining bricks that were still in one piece and put them back in their original places, then filled in the rest with new bricks. The result is a mostly light-coloured church with a scattering of black bricks speckled throughout. It looks really cool.
We also enjoyed a nice walk in the ‘forest’, a wooded nature area only about a 15 minute walk from our hostel. After writing this it doesn’t seem like Dresden has that much to offer, but it must have been the good vibes of the city, because it stands out as one of our favourite cities so far.
PS - Nick reminds me to mention 'the bagel place' - there was an amazing little bagel shop just down the street from our hostel. The bagels easily rivaled Montreal bagels, and they were made into amazing sandwiches. It is owned by a super friendly, chatty guy who, while running this bagel place in the evenings, also goes to school full time for hunting! He told us how he has to learn all about shooting and guns (obviously), but also about forestry and butchery. He was nervous for his shooting test and said he's the worst in his class! Quite interesting stuff...
