Today was a very, very early morning start with a 6:15am taxi to the bus station. We were taking the 7:30 bus out to San Antonio de Areco to spend the day at an estancia, or a ranch. Beef is huge in Argentina and there are tons of cattle ranches out this way. Our bus took about 2 hours to get to this small town, and then we had to take a cab out to El Ombu estancia. The place was huge, I think over 300 hectares of land. We were told there were over 400 cows on the farm, and many sheep and goats as well. We started our morning off with a horseback ride (it was my first time ever on a horse!) around the ranch to see the gauchos (cowboys) herd some of the cattle. Other than the fact that it was absolutely freezing, it was really fun to see. We had about an hour or so to kill before the big 'asada' (bbq) lunch and most of that time was spent trying to warm up by the fire. Lunch was amazing and I didn’t eat nearly as much as Chris did. There was coleslaw, potato salad, mixed green salad and then they brought out the meat! There was sausage, chicken, ribs, steak, and prime rib. I only ate the chicken, but Chris somehow managed to try everything! He was full, but definitely happy. We went out again in the afternoon for a longer horseback ride around the entire estancia. It had warmed up a bit and the wind had died down so it wasn’t as bad as this morning. We stuck around for a little bit longer to have some coffee and fresh cookies. We had booked tickets to take the 8:10 bus home, but headed over to the bus stop to see if we could catch the earlier one back to Buenos Aires. Unfortunately, they were charging quite a bit to change the tickets so we decided to wait. We watched a movie in the meantime at the bus station and got back to Buenos Aires around 10 or so. We fit right in with the locals when we ate dinner at 11 tonight!
