Today we visited Kinkaku-ji, also known as The Golden Pavilion, since it is completely covered in gold foil! Originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it has since been converted into a temple. The temple was burned down in 1950 by a young monk, but has been fully restored. The scenery was also very nice. It was truly an amazing sight!
We spent the rest of the afternoon in Arashiyama (30 min by train). We went mainly to see the bamboo grove, which was well worth the trip.
Back in Kyoto we had time for one more temple, Kiyomizu-ji, which is known for it's beautiful view. The temple overlooks Kyoto city.
