This year marks an exciting year for Masinyusane Development Organization, the NGO I help with. Besides being involved at Lwandelekazi High School (one of the poorest schools in the province), Masinyusane has also adopted Ben Sinuka. Ben Sinuka is a primary school right down the road that is also in very tough shape; however, after meeting with the motivated, determined, and supportive Principal, Masinyusane agreed to come into the school and help renovate.
Although they are just doing renovative work right now (painting the buildings, fixing up the bathrooms- which you can't walk in without stepping in water-, and trying to get trees donated) in the next few years the organization really hopes to dive in and start holding afterschool classes as well
Mary West, my professor at NMMU (the University I studied at in Spring 2011) is helping at the primary school this year as well. She brings a group of university students on Thursdays. They are teaching English through song to these young students. The other week they taught the children the song "World's Greatest."
Beautiful things are happening in the New Brighton Township. Besides the after-school courses and clubs (Chess, Netball Team, and Drama) and delivering food to students' families once a week for Lwandelekazi high school students, Masinyusane also continues to hold the study hub where students from various townships gather to recieve tutoring from 3:30-7 p.m. at night. Students walk from 40 minutes away to get help from the Masinyusane-employed Student Leaders.
The Student Leader program is also another neat aspect of Masinyusane
We want to see them be the first in their families to go to university so that, from there, a cycle of giving back can continue.
In 2013, Masinyusane is really "Raising Each Other Up."
