September has come and gone in Japan, which means yet another SPORTS DAY (or undokai) has passed.  Thank goodness!  Now if we could just get the choral contest and the Culture Festival out of the way, perhaps the students could actually have time to learn again.  It's amazing that Japan, a country so strict on their education and testing systems- allows so much time to be wasted on such frivolous activities.  Of course if you ask any Japanese person, they might have a different word for these events....

Sports Day at Ibukidai wasn't nearly as exciting the second time around.  I had the ever-so-important job of changing the flags.  Red flag if set up was in progress, and White flag if it was okay for the activity to begin.  This job required me to stand out in the sun all day, while most of the other teachers hid in the shade.  As important as this may SEEM, I noticed that no one actually cared whether or not I changed the flags, nor did anyone even notice if I forgot to change them.  Instead the job just gave poor little Brianne something to do to keep her out of the way (and away from the students.)

After lunch, I gave up on my IMPORTANT job- and went to cheer on the races with my two 8th grade pals (perhaps the only two students that talked to me the entire day.)  SAD!  This huge school is SAD!

When I got home at the end of the day I realized that I had a ridiculous farmer's tan (one that could put my father to shame) from my day in the heat.  It was about that time that I also remembered that regardless of the fact that I had drank 5 16oz bottles of water and sports drinks, I had yet to tinkle the entire day.  No wonder I had a migraine and my head was spinning.  Bed time for Brianne, and no enkai (party with the teachers) because I was off to Malaysia the very next day!
