How to emotionally part with your possessions

Entry 4 of 7 | show all | print this entry

I never realized how hard it would be to (emotionally) part with all my stuff.

I mean stupid things.. like t-shirts and my old calculator and notes from my high school girlfriend. These are all things that I literally haven't touched, thought about, or looked at in years, yet when it comes down to "toss" or "keep," and when the "keep" pile should fit into one single suitcase I can use for traveling the world, suddenly everything seems important.

I think about all the stories and memories I have with everything (EVERYTHING!). I think about the fun times I can share with my kids and grandkids, and I imagine that every item I own can be a catalyst for a day of great conversation and story telling. (I don't consider the fact that my offspring probably won't give two shits about all my stories. But they're interesting to me!)

So what to do with all my stuff?

The solution: Take a digital photo, and then fill the garbage can. I'm taking photos of almost everything I'm tossing out or giving away. We're talking clothes, shoes, toys, electronics... Anything paper-based is getting scanned and then tossed out.

The result will be maybe a GB or two of digital photos of all my old stuff. Then I can look at the pictures and re-live my childhood and tell my stories. I even posed these into my picasa album (although mostly because then they would be backed up as opposed to people wanting to see the stuff I don't have anymore).
