Step 1: Sell Everything I Own
Entry 2 of 7 | show all | print this entry |
I've been giving this whole "world citizen" thing a lot more thought, and I'm more excited than ever. I've also realized that there are A LOT of logistical things that I need to take care of before I leave.
The first major decision I need to make is "What should I do with all my stuff?" Should I rent a storage area and store everything? Should I sell it all? Should I keep my house and rent it out, furnished?
After considering all of the options, I decided that If I'm going to do this, I'm gonna do it "right." And that means that I don't want anything tying me down. Quite frankly I'm not sure I ever see myself living in the DC area again, so I don't really want to store things here. My parents live in Ohio, so I could rent a storage area there. But again, for what? What do I really need to store? And what happens if I never live permanently in the US again? Then what will I do with the crap in the storage area?
This reminds me of my uncle who used to be a carpenter. He saved thousands of dollars worth of tools. You know what this led to? He moved them from place-to-place for the last 15 years, and now his tools worth $2000 in 1990 are completely worthless, because you can buy the same tools brand-new for about $300, and they would be better quality and new. So he really missed out on the chance to make maybe $1000 in 1990, not to mention that he dragged all this stuff from place to place over the last decade.
So for me, that means that I want to get rid of everything. "Everything" means:
-My house -My car -My two motorcycles -All my furniture
I want to trim down my possessions inventory so that I can fit everything I own into a few big boxes. Everything else will be thrown out or sold.
The only exception is for the few things that are personally meaningful today that I know I'll want someday. Luckily my parents have a house in Ohio, so I can keep a few things there. But I stress the word few. I'm talking about Christmas ornaments, some paintings and knick-knacks that were my grandmother's, and maybe some baseball cards and stuff from my childhood.
Everything else must go.
