Where I stayed
Glen Oak Park Ampitheatre
Peoria Municipal Band
It was a very warm and humid June evening with no breeze to be found. I was sitting on a blanket with several hundred other people as the steam raised up from the grass. You could hear the water running as the fountain gushed over the lagoon. Finally the sun was setting and the temperature began to cool a bit as the show was about to begin
I was sitting in the grass directly in front of the stage when the Peoria Municipal Band took the stage for their Sunday evening performance. Everyone came to their feet and the gentleman removed their hats and caps as the band began to play the Star Spangled Banner
The band began by playing the theme from Superman which was written by John Williams in 1977. Then the next selection was a lively tune called the Gypsy Dance and used a lot of tambourines. The third song chose included soloist Jessica Wisner who is a soprano from Bradley University and sang opera by Wagner. The very next song was very familiar as it came from the move Breakfast at Tiffany’s which was Moon River and originally sung by Audrey Hepburn. Next was a medley of Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Paul Simon. The band played several more tunes before playing Edelweiss from the Sound of Music.
The temperature began to cool and the sun was down when the band finished and played America the Beautiful and everyone stood and clapped to end a wonderful evening of music. If you ever get the chance I would highly recommend going to Glen Oak Park on a Sunday evening and enjoy listening to a wide range of music at a cost you can’t beat, free.
