Took a sleeper train from Xi'an to Chongqing. Chongqing is one of the largest cities in the world according to my guide book. I only heard of the place for the first time a few days before I arrived. There's not much to do and see in the city but it is the starting point for the ferry through the Three Gorges on the Yangtze river (3rd longest in the world). Took a hydrofoil boat through the gorges. The scenery the boat passed through was amazing, the gorges towered over the river on either side. The boat finished at the Three Gorges Dam. This monstrous piece of engineering is only a few metres short of two kilometres long. It's caused a lot of controversey as it has resulted in many villages being submerged by the river which was 125 metres deep in places.

The boat threw me out in Wuhan. From Wuhan I'm going to make my way to Yangshuo to try and get a look at some proper Chinese countryside. I need a break from the big cities!
