On day 8 we reached Namche, the Sherpa capital. Up until this point there had been no communication with the outside world. No phone, no internet and no TV. Namche was the only point on the trek where we came across a semblance of civilisation with a few expensive phone and internet shops in the village. At 3500 metres this is where the altitude became a factor. There is less oxygen in the air at this altitude so the human body needs time to adjust to this. Climbing too high too quickly can lead to serious altitude sickness (I read all that in my guide book!).
We spent two nights at Namche getting acclimatised to the altitude. From Namche we trekked to Tengboche, checking out the cool monastery there. From there we stayed in Pangboche, Dingboche (where we spent another acclimatisation day) and Thulkha. At 4600 metres, we were really starting to feel the cold at Thulkha.
