Up pretty early to do the beds and pack the car up. Just as well we had that Skoda. The back seat was loaded with Xmas presents! As we were leaving the house Anne closed the front door with the key on the inside. I had to go and talk to Dougie and explain.
Down the A68, through Jedburgh, over the Cheviots, around Newcastle until we joined the A1 near Darlington. We had lunch in a Little Chef at Scotch Corner where, if the 'hostess' had asked me one more time if I was enjoying the meal, I would have thrown it at her.
We continued on down the A1(M) past signs pointing to all those familiar cities on the left and right of us such as York, Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds and Sheffield until we turned off at a sign for Matlock. We knew that nephew B's house was on a steep hill leading out of town but as we drove down into Matlock it was not so easy to find...most of the roads leading in were steep down hills. We rang him and he directed us across to Rutland St. and up to his house. Just as well, the road was closed for repairs at the top. I parked the car in the road ( although I moved it in the morning into a side street ) and dumped our overnight bags in their spare room. R and her daughter E were in residence and we all sat around the kitchen and chatted while B whipped up a vegetarian stir fry, son S did his homework, R pretended to look useful and E showed us how to eat raw carrots and grass.
Fruit and vegetables are the diet in this household unless S can persuade his dad otherwise when the other two are not around. But when they are together they must get through an enormous amount of flora. The grocery bill must be enormous especially as R goes for the organic varieties as well.
Anne washed up...I couldn't face it. We retired to our bed settee and had a restless night.
