SUNDAY, 1st October
October already and it rained most of the day...sadly. Sadly because it was Bullefest day. The streets on the lake side of Moos were packed with people (under umbrellas) strolling among stalls displaying their onions. Onions tied up in to all manner of shapes but I was surprised on the whole to note that they were not very large, unlike the pumpkins which grew to enormous size and shapes. [I wonder why it is that they have not developed an onion the size of a football? Mind you I would not like to be the one who had the job of slicing it up.] There were stalls with huge displays of floral arrangements, cakes and pastries to die for, German hot dogs where the sausage is larger than the bun and marquee beer halls with bands of the oompah oompah variety to entertain the punters. It was an annual event and I was amazed that so many people turned up on such a rotten day. Even sadder was that the period before and after were wonderful sunny days. I had to choose between a savoury pancake or the sausage in a brick as my contribution to the stall holders. I chose the latter. I do like sausages although I found the skins tough...like chewing rubber! We bought some cheese as well for later. What the Germans lack in red meats they certainly make up for in the variety of cheeses, cold meats and sausages.  [They would get a shock if they saw our butcher shops with all those carcasses hanging in the background and the huge variety of red meats arraigned in front of them. Not to mention the chickens. We never saw anything like the range of chook meat we have in our malls and I have nor yet seen a KFC, an Oporto or a Red Rooster.
