The South west has 3 peninsulas of extraordinary scenery; Beara, Kerry, Dingle that are a must for any trip to Ireland. The slightly more touristy area is further south of Dingle around Killarney in the Kerry region. We stayed 2 nights at a marvellous B&B in Dingle called Milestone House in Dingle . The hosts, Barbara and Michael were exceptionally friendly and helpful to show us where to find great food and music by evening and walks by day. The traditional music was great in this town.
Dingle has a few pubs that traditionally doubled as merchandise shops, so you could have, historically, bought some new boots and have a beer while you wait
The second day at Dingle and we went exploring the peninsular. Drove round narrow winding cliffs with stone walls, walked on sandy beaches with massive Atlantic seas, rambled along coastline tracks between farms, climbed a headland and saw 4-6 meter basking sharks (vegitarians), climbed the Brandon headland beside soaring cliffs on green paddocks dotted by Blackfaced Scottish sheep. Sounds great?– it was.
To top it all off we found a place called the court House Pub where traditional Irish musicians call in to play on a free night where we enjoyed the vibe and the music till midnight. There were 3 flautists, violin, Irish Elian pipes, guitar and a banjo. It was fantastic. We met one flautist, Larry, who said he picked up his 19th century black Cocos wood flute in the original box on ebay for $65. It was a great experience of everything Irish.
