Maps can be deceiving. Some places you go, you take a look at the map and think, "It's just round the corner - easy...". An hour later, you discover you're only half way there. I have been dominated more than once in this manner. Other times, the map makes a place seem a whole lot bigger than it actually is, causing you to walk right past your intended destination and of into the sunset. I have been dominated more than once in this manner, too. Colonia del Sacramento falls into this second category. It's small, deceptively small.

It's also cute, Colonia, very cute. It's small and it's cute. From what I have seen though, not alot actually happens here. In fact, a good slogan for a t-shirt would be 'Colonia - Nothing to Report'. May try and sell that idea. But not alot needs to happen, because it's cute. "What makes it so cute?", I hear you ask. Well, here are a few examples of it's cuteness -

- it's small

- it's made up almost entirely of winding stone streets (not just cobblestones, but big, heavy duty chunks of jagged stone)

- old cars from the 1940's line these streets (I guess I should call them automobiles then) colonia 1
colonia 1
. Old motorcycles too.

- many of it's streets are overgrown with trees and flowers

- it has ocean views

- it's really, really old (that 'could collapse at any time' kinda old)

Back in the day it was something of a smuggler's port and pirate stronghold, according to the tourist information centre. Just quietly, how cool are pirates? Except for the pants, they're a bit average. Nowadays, old Colonia is more of a tourist stronghold, with most visitors hitting the place for the day, via the 'rapido' ferry from Buenos Aires. Why? Because it's cute. I also took this ferry here. 45 minutes port to port - muy rapido. Plus, the ferry is a nice change from the bus, let me tell you.

When a place is this cute, you have plenty of photo opportunities. So that's how I've spent the bulk of my time, taking photos. And watching football. Outside of the Old Town, there ain't much here of note. Except if you like museums. There are 7 within two streets of each other. C'mon now, if I've managed to avoid entering a museum for 5 weeks thus far, I'm not going into one now. No chance. There's also an old, now disused bull ring, which was pretty cool. That's it.

A small entry for a small town. Time to move on. To the capitol - Montevideo...
