Day three on the Bourbon Trail and we are aiming to hit the last three distilleries before continuing east. First one up is Maker's Mark. The tour is great and so is the tasting session. We get to sample some of the 'white lightning’ which is basically the same stuff before it goes into the barrel for aging and indeed this is hot stuff. At the end of the tour, both of us pick up a small bottle of Maker’s Mark for friends – a small offering for temporary use of their couch – and they let us dip the bottles in their signature hot, red wax.

Second in line is Four Roses. This one is a little less known than the rest, but is equally good in taste. Apparently, the brand has been around for ages but the Four Roses name was recently retrieved from some bottom shelf whiskey blend and bestowed upon their fine line of bourbons. The distilling process here is explained in detail and the grains are blended in scientific variations and ratios. Bret’s favorite ratio: one part coke, one part whiskey.

We finish on a strong note at Wild Turkey, with which we are both extremely familiar. After a tour of the property and a final tasting, we grab a bottle of some American Honey for future use and truck on to find a campsite at Twin Knobs Park in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Cue the choir of angelic voices, because this site was awesome. Looking from our window it was love at first site and there was that shining glittery, border that framed our view of site number 22 on the F loop. A tiny little path gave way to a private cove on the massive Cave Run Lake. And the sun was H-O-T, hot! We almost fell down as we stripped to our swimsuits and made a beeline for the water. Screw the tent and everything else, all we needed was towels and sunglasses. So we baked for a couple of hours with intermittent dips into the lake to avoid overcooking.

Once the sun went down, we made some mac and cheese with little bits of sausage mixed in and sat around the campfire with the superior feeling of laying claim to site #22. With bourbon in the belly, we are finally eyeing the east coast. With the exception of the daddy-long legs that gave Lizette the heebie jeebies, this campsite was the perfect place to end our long run of camping adventures.
