Today we head to The Windy City, Chi-town...Chicago – another city we've both amazingly yet to visit.

Bret is very interested in the history of the city and we’ve already booked an architecture tour for tomorrow morning. We snag a hotel room along the Magnificent Mile, courtesy of my Venture Capital One Rewards. (Gotta spend money to make money, right?)

We say goodbye to Kristina and cannot thank her enough for showing us around town. She suggests we grab some coffees at Caribou Coffee for our long roadtrip ahead. We’ve got at least 7 hours on the road today.

Bret drives us out of Minnesota, straight through Wisconsin and into Illinois. By the time we arrive in Illinois, it’s around 3:30pm and we haven’t had lunch. On a whim, we search to see if there is a Chick-Fil-A within 30 miles of us. [Bret is a huge Chick-Fil-A fan and he’s craved it pretty much ever since our move outta Texas in 2005.] Sure enough, there’s one just 15 minutes away and it’s on our way to Chicago.

We eat in, enjoying our chicken sandwiches and grateful for the chance to stretch our legs for a little while.

Once we get 20 miles outside of downtown, we hit some traffic but we take in the scenery of the skyscrapers in the distance.

Bret safely delivers us to downtown and to the Allerton Hotel. The lobby is filled with beautiful Swedish flight attendants - male and female - and a strong mix of their perfumes and colognes fills our nostrils as we walk in. We quickly check in, drop off our bags and do a quick search for watering holes in the immediate vicinity.

As soon as we head out of the hotel and out onto the streets, we both realize how much we’ve missed city living. There’s something about the tall beautiful buildings, the rush of people walking past us and the sound of cabs and cars rolling by. We loved life in the country but we think city living is still where it’s at for us – at least for now.

We grab some beers at an Irish pub and try to catch the last of the Giants game and then head to Billy Goat Tavern, a bar that’s been around since the 1930s. Apparently you can catch a mix of locals and celebrities here on any given night. We don’t have any celebrity run-ins, but we do meet a young couple from Arkansas – they’re probably in their mid-20s and they’re in town to celebrate both of their birthdays. We drink a few with them for about an hour, trying to find the similarities between us.

It’s midnight now, and we realize we haven’t had dinner, so we head to the hotel, hoping to find a deep dish pizza joint still open. No such luck. So we order in some cheap Chinese food from a place that’s supposedly open every day from 8 am to 5am. Twenty minutes later, we’re enjoying Chinese food and watching Conan O’Brien.

Tomorrow morning, we have to be up and out the door by 9am to catch the architecture tour we’ve booked!
