Where I stayed
Kristina Kulp's Pad
Neither one of us has been, so we have no idea what to expect.
Thankfully, we have a friend, Kristina Kulp, who we haven’t seen in many years and she has kindly offered to let us stay with her.
As soon as we arrive at her place, it’s all business, and by business we mean eating, drinking and sight-seeing. After some surprisingly delicious garlic burgers at Jake’s City Grill, she drives us to downtown Minneapolis which is where she works and where Target Field – home of the Minnesota Twins – is.
We get to scope out her amazing office building, Target Field (where Little Leaguers are pouring out of) and the Sky Walk of Minneapolis
After our downtown tour, knowing Bret loves architecture, she takes us by the Guthrie Theater, where a variety of performances are given every weekend throughout the year. The building is pretty impressive with something like the longest escalator around and a cool overhanging wing that almost juts out above the Mississippi River. It’s another windy day in the Midwest so we only spend a few seconds outside, taking in the view.
She swings us to the other side of the Mississippi where we grab some refreshing lemonades and a beer at Tugg’s Tavern and then we head to the sister city St. Paul. We check out the inside of St. Paul’s Cathedral just before they’re about to close for the day and the outside of the state capitol of Minnesota.
Before returning to Minneapolis, we stop by Candyland in downtown St. Paul and grab a variety of chocolate covered potato chips and nuts and their Chicago mix of butter, cheese and caramel popcorn.
We also hit Patrick McGovern’s (a cool Midwest tavern) for some more local brews and a split tray of appetizers.
In just a few hours, it felt like we’d seen so much, so we’re all pretty exhausted when we get back to Kristina’s. She also has a presentation in the morning, but with her boss’s permission, she’ll be able to take a half day after her meeting and show us more of the city! Big thanks for such a wonderful introduction to a frequently overlooked, but very cool city.
