We thought we might find some good camping at Silver Strand State Beach, and even though hardly anyone was there, it was mostly RV camping. So we walked around a bit, saw some dolphins and decided to try another beach up north.
On our way to the cute seaside towns north of San Diego, we visited the Salk Institute, which was designed by architect Louis Kahn. When we reached South Carlsbad State Beach, we realized it was the same campground we stayed at almost eight years ago when we flew out to San Diego for Lizette's first marathon, the San Diego Rock 'n’ Roll Marathon
However, we were a little shocked by the camp fees; $35 for an inland site or $50 for an ocean-front site. Since we’re both unemployed, we figured we’d stick inland. Luckily, no one camped in front of us so we had an ocean view anyway!
After the tent was up, we built a fire, drank a six-pack of Pacifico, which was the cheapest beer at the nearby Ralph’s, and cooked up some hotdogs.
We really can’t imagine spending our one-year anniversary any other way than sitting around a campfire drinking a bottle of wine we happened to bring down from San Francisco. Although if it
turns out a year from now we both have good jobs and are able to spend our two-year anniversary at some fancy restaurant in New York, that’d be nice too.
