OUR STORY: Vicksburg is not really what I expected. It is hilly here and beautiful views of the Mississippi from up on the bluff.
It really is a living museum of the civil war, because as you drive you can see trenches where fighting took place and the citizens of Vicksburg hide during the siege our House on the Road
our House on the Road
. Hard to believe this all took place 145 years ago yesterday. That's right the siege ended on the 4th of July 1863. Do you know that Vicksburg did not celebrate the 4th of July from 1863 to after the second world war. They were just not happy to be defeated by the north.
We are staying across the road from the Ameristar Casino in their RV park which is very nice. Has a pool (which is a necessity I have decided) and wonderful laundry and even give you a free breakfast down at the casino which is situated right on the Mississippi. (we are up on the bluff above)
Last night we watched the fireworks down on the river and had a great sleep.
We got up and went down to the farmers market which we both really enjoy and bought up large. So tonight Brent is cooking Okra in corn meal, mashed pumpkin, fresh peppers and egg plant and in addition we bought homemade Ciabata bread with olive oil.Not to mention pepper jelly, Ymmm
Following the market we headed to the Casino for Breakie. Food and more food but we both had an omelette made while we watched and it was great how this lady had the whole process sorted out. Two omelettes at once, all in a matter of seconds.
Compared to our fellow dinners we looked pretty pathetic as to the quantity we could eat but hey ........ A really old indian mound!!
A really old indian mound!!
.
We then headed towards the Vicksburg National park, this visit was for Brents benefit, he has been studying the history of the civil war for over a year and wanted to see the 16 mile long park, which was essentially one big battlefield. We saw cannon and rifle being fired, and lots of statues, and monuments, the trenches are all still apparent. The visit was great but the heat was tremendous, and it was hard to imagine how the soldiers lived in the heat, let alone the cannon fire and rifle shot.

We intend to spend the next few days camping along the Natchez Trace, and we doubt if we will have internet for quite a few days, we are slowly heading towards Nashville, bring on the music!!!

CR report
Hi Y'all,,,bet you can say that like a good old boy now . I am enjoying your entries. Things are fine here , We are in a stretch of unreal weather . 25 c for 14 days with no rain . The pinks are in the river ! we went the river 90 minutes north last week and they wee pouring in from the ocean over the sand bar! considering how fresh they were all the fishermen were surprised they did not take better. every cast with a spoon but slow on a fly for all. ross is in cockrane still and has not yet hayed due to weather. He is lucky and will get a ride to coast with Cher, marsh, and jen as they have a horse show in van AUG 2.
Di gets a knee replacement sept 3 and will be off till new year. Other than that not much really.Oh yeah went to west coast van island and had a great time halibut fishing and caught a 34 and 26 pound spring salmon . You know Brent we could have been having some real fun here. But alas it cannot be . I think you ought to plan for 2010 july 15 or so and we can go and fish and be someone. Jo can golf everyday her and di can prepare meals and we could both pretend we are somebody! ( If I am to dream I might as well dream Big).
All for now and up load some more photos. Are you able to check your NZ e mail address?---grant
